Jag har egentligen aldrig hört Nifelheim på platta och det är antagligen på grund av en spelning jag såg med dem på Sweden Rock 2004, där jag stod i regnet och flinade när de kastade köttrens ur en barnkista och tyckte de såg urlöjliga ut. Ikväll lyckades de vända en kraschande spelning och få mig att vilja kolla upp deras musik…

I sina spikförsedda läderkreationer kommer Nifelheim ut på scenen och direkt märker man varför det här är ett band som står ut från mängden rent livemässigt. Jag tror inte att det finns ett enda band som tar rollen så seriöst som dem. Det riktigt lyser i ögonen på dem när de jagar upp sina följeslagare som trängs längst fram; alla är så extremt taggade till tänderna när Pelle ”Hellbutcher” tar första tonen – och så fungerar inte micken...

ASSAULT är kvällens ”förband”, ett lokalt band som gör sin första Sverigespelning. Svartklädda med rånarluvor kliver de för tidigt på scen. Introlåten håller nämligen på tillräckligt länge för att det ska bli lite pinsamt att se när de bara står där och väntar i sina luvor – som säger ungefär ”Vi ÄR tuffa egentligen!”. Jag hoppas att det låter bättre än vad det ser ut, för det här känns tyvärr bara löjligt. Man har smetat lite blod på armarna vilket jag antar ska se ut som om de kommit från ett slagsmål.

Det här är någon form av arg-metal, brutal black/döds/mangel. Mina förhoppningar infrias – det låter väldigt tight, välrepeterat och trummisen, jösses vilken talang. Han kan gå hur långt som helst.

Redan dagen innan Metal Legacy höjs mina förväntningar då säkra källor deklarerar att tre grishuvuden har blivit levererade och fem liter oxblod står på kylning. Tänk att man kan bli så uppspelt över lite kadaver. Men det skvallrar ju om att det här kommer att göras ordentligt!

Metal Legacy är alltså arrangerat av två herrar från Strömstad, Stefan Haush och Jan Bratland. De har lyckats med de magnifika bokningarna NIFELHEIM, MARDUK och MAYHEM – på en och samma kväll. Bara det ska de ha en klapp på axeln för, det är ju knappt så man lyckas få det serverat på en och samma festival av större kaliber.

Kalaset äger rum på Skagerack i Strömstad, ett trevåningshus med stor potential till många olika sorters evenemang...

Artist: Stallion Four
EP: Rough Times (självsläpp)
Genre: Rock/hårdrock

Detta känns som ytterligare ett hårdrocksband i mängden som försöker slå igenom utan att ha någonting som helst som talar för att de kommer lyckas. Ska man bli stor inom en genre som denna så krävs det liksom att man antingen gör något nyskapande eller är riktigt jävla bra. Stallion Four gör/är varken eller, förutom kanske det tveksamma namnet då (hur tänkte de där?)

Jag tycker att det här är rent ointressant. Det finns ingenting jag fastnar för, tja, det svänger lite i refrängen i första låten Madness, men när andra spåret Rough Times börjar har jag redan glömt hur den gick. Sista spåret Troublemaker är mest plågsam, helt ärligt.

Tonights support comes from Voodoo Johnson playing what is almost certainly their largest ever show, at the sold out Shepherds Bush Empire. Voodoo Johnson are the support for the whole of Europe’s UK tour and have been getting postive responses from both reviewers and audience alike, and tonight appears to be no different with the crowd clearly appreciating their classic rock sound.

Tonights performance by Europe is being filmed for a DVD release, so there are numerous film cameras in evidence, including one in an already overcrowded photo pit. As the time approaches for the band to come on stage the rising excitement in the crowd is clearly evident...

Tonights event at the Scala venue is completely sold out with a large queue forming outside well before the doors open.
First up tonight is Anathema’s label mates North Atlantic Oscillation. By the time they go on stage the venue is already fairly full so they have a large crod to impress. NAO play some very good prog rock with a strong electronic feel to it. Its certainly nowhere near as heavy as Anathema but their brand of prog goes down well with the crowd and no doubt will have earned them some new fans. Their set includes several tracks from their album ”Grappling Hooks” as well as a number of new tracks.

By the time Anathema take to the stage, the venue is absolutely jammed full of people...

Napalm/Sound Pollution
Austrian band ARTAS has been around for five years, and they have won Metalchamp 2007, plus released two albums, this included. Modern metal is the preferred flavor, mixed vocals, lyrics in several languages, double bass drumming plus mix and mastering by Jacob Hansen (HATESPHERE, HEAVEN SHALL BURN etc.). How did this turn out then?

The intro “A Journey Begins” feels like recapturing the Arab world today, sirens, noises etc. But what was fun and heedless in the eighties is reality for many today. Perhaps ARTAS is the voice of many at present? “Fortress of No Hope” hammers on like SEPULTURA after 1990, but also includes a modern melodic touch. ARTAS is both heavy and catchy; growl, echoes, light grind, everything adds to a mix that is never obnoxious...

Napalm/Sound Pollution

BATTELORE has found inspiration in Tolkien´s “The Children of Húrin”, especially in the character Túrin Turambar, for their new album. Epic fantasy metal & Tolkien go together like a horse and carriage. To be sure they patch things properly they´ve hired Janne Saksa at Sound Supreme Studio and Dan Swanö. Is this as inspired as the cover on the band´s sixth album?

Finnish metal with fairy-like vocals by Kaisa Jouhki and rough vocal parts by Tomi Mykkönen, keys and flute by Maria Honkanen, catchy meets beastial. Yes, we´ve heard it before. “Bloodstained” echoes of fantasy, but among all the soft notes the refrain is less convincing. The varied “Iron of Death” follows suite, rides on an inspired keyboard pattern while the drumming is amazingly thin...

Rob Zombie, Manchester Apollo, England, Thursday Feb 17th 2011.

This show had a lot to live up to. 12 long years had passed since Rob Zombie had toured the UK, Having presold all tickets to the original venue, the Academy 1, the show was moved to the much bigger venue, the Apollo, and this also sold out in record time, you just knew this was going to be something just a little bit special.

Revoker, the 1st of two support bands were already on and seemed to have a pretty big crowd for an opening band. Though I suspect most people where claiming there places for Rob Zombie, more than anything else. Not a bad band, but I missed most of their set, trying to get a drink at the bar.

Skindred took to the stage around 8pm...

The winter-end and beginning of Spring 2011 comes with a bunch of cool concerts at the Betong venue which belongs to the Norwegian Students organisation. These events go under the name of South of Heaven and the first night had Nile as headliners, 3 more bands on the lineup and it ended up with an extra band playing in between (Pressure Points). The evening started right on time, as opposed to most of Oslo concerts that tend to start at least half an hour after the doors open.

Hence, when I entered the venue, Goat the Head was already on stage and I only witnessed their last song. And how sorry I can be...
