Massacre/Sound Pollution

SIX REASONS TO KILL are amongst the forerunners of metal/hardcore, and are a big name in the underground scene. They started out with a lot of death metal in their sound, but have since developed into a hybrid of modern and extreme death, hardcore, added atmosphere and touches of electronica. They have gigged a lot with hot bands, will they become a household name themselves after this disc?

Lars Tekolf follows the trend of screams and growl, the guitars are truly riffing away in the hands of Marco Andree and Loc Tran. The rhythm section of bassist Matthias Machenheimer and drummer Florian Durr complete the sound. Various vocals and added synthesizer patterns are their own input. Massacre/Sound Pollution

Thrash success LEGION OF THE DAMNED has been at it since 2004, not 1990 as could be expected. They rose from the ashes of OCCULT, another fine band, to focus on horror themes and explosive thrash. This is their fifth album, and the success of their past four plus this new one recently got them booked on the bill of Sweden Rock Festival 2011. Sounds more than intriguing…

Repeated passages of spoken words in a chanting tone open the proceedings in “… This Is the Age of…”. Night of the Sabbath” has a lot of bite, the scorching vocals courtesy of Maurice Swinkels and lack of double bass drums add to the retro effect. It echoes of quite a lot of old thrash giants. “War Is in My Blood” follows suit, and all you have to do is bang your head...

Spinefarm/Universal

Värmländska SPARZANZA sägs vara hårdare, mörkare och kraftfullare nu än på de föregående tre studioskivorna (2003-09). De har fått en bra start då singeln ”Temple of the Red-Eyed Pigs” spelas flitigt på diverse radiostationer. De har höjts och utlovat stordåd hela tiden, kommer det stora genombrottet nu?

Radiofavoriten ”Temple of the Red-Eyed Pigs” avslöjar att SPARZANZA behållit sina melodier, kanske rentav finslipat dem ytterligare. Men också tuffat till skränen och gitarrljudet. Hur som helst är det en bra öppning. Konceptet med tyngd och närmast poppig melodi upprepas, fast något mjukare, direkt i efterföljande ”Alone with a Loaded Gun”. Samma stil, men inte lika övertygande som singeln. Låtarna är mellan 2.44 och 3...

Artist: Cold Body Radiation
Album: The Great White Emptiness (Dusktone)
Genre: Post-black metal

Det här är debutplattan från det Nederländska enmansprojektet, startat 2009 av M. Jag skulle vilja beskriva det som någon form av shoegaze-post-black metal. Lugna, stilla partier varvas med skrik och distade, skräniga gitarrer. Sången är otydlig och den göms långt bakom instrumenten. Jag får verkligen känslan av att den här typen bakom musiken är helt inne i sig själv och det han gör.

Jag är inte speciellt bevandrad inom post-black, men det här är inte så himla illa. För ja, det är skränigt. Men melodierna… De är som en resa genom drömmar, plågsamt och vackert. Man skymtar både ljus och mörker och det får mig att vilja sluta ögonen och lyssna vidare...

Artist: Stallion Four
EP: Rough Times (självsläpp)
Genre: Rock/hårdrock

Detta känns som ytterligare ett hårdrocksband i mängden som försöker slå igenom utan att ha någonting som helst som talar för att de kommer lyckas. Ska man bli stor inom en genre som denna så krävs det liksom att man antingen gör något nyskapande eller är riktigt jävla bra. Stallion Four gör/är varken eller, förutom kanske det tveksamma namnet då (hur tänkte de där?)

Jag tycker att det här är rent ointressant. Det finns ingenting jag fastnar för, tja, det svänger lite i refrängen i första låten Madness, men när andra spåret Rough Times börjar har jag redan glömt hur den gick. Sista spåret Troublemaker är mest plågsam, helt ärligt.

Det är inte så att det är dåligt utfört, varför en ...

Napalm/Sound Pollution
Austrian band ARTAS has been around for five years, and they have won Metalchamp 2007, plus released two albums, this included. Modern metal is the preferred flavor, mixed vocals, lyrics in several languages, double bass drumming plus mix and mastering by Jacob Hansen (HATESPHERE, HEAVEN SHALL BURN etc.). How did this turn out then?

The intro “A Journey Begins” feels like recapturing the Arab world today, sirens, noises etc. But what was fun and heedless in the eighties is reality for many today. Perhaps ARTAS is the voice of many at present? “Fortress of No Hope” hammers on like SEPULTURA after 1990, but also includes a modern melodic touch. ARTAS is both heavy and catchy; growl, echoes, light grind, everything adds to a mix that is never obnoxious...

Napalm/Sound Pollution

BATTELORE has found inspiration in Tolkien´s “The Children of Húrin”, especially in the character Túrin Turambar, for their new album. Epic fantasy metal & Tolkien go together like a horse and carriage. To be sure they patch things properly they´ve hired Janne Saksa at Sound Supreme Studio and Dan Swanö. Is this as inspired as the cover on the band´s sixth album?

Finnish metal with fairy-like vocals by Kaisa Jouhki and rough vocal parts by Tomi Mykkönen, keys and flute by Maria Honkanen, catchy meets beastial. Yes, we´ve heard it before. “Bloodstained” echoes of fantasy, but among all the soft notes the refrain is less convincing. The varied “Iron of Death” follows suite, rides on an inspired keyboard pattern while the drumming is amazingly thin...

Ralf Scheepers är en av Tysklands mesta heavy metal-sångare. Han debuterade redan 1983 med TYRAN PACE och ”Eye to Eye”, fortsatte med GAMMA RAYS tre första skivor innan han och Mat Sinner bildade PRIMAL FEAR 1997. Ralf kan sin falsett och har jämförts med både RONNIE JAMES DIO (RIP) och IAN GILLAN. Han höll i processen på att bli ny sångare i JUDAS PRIEST, men det jobbet gick till Tim ”Ripper” Owens. 2007 började Ralf planera på denna skiva – nu kör vi.

”Locked in the Dungeon” inleder i bästa JUDAS PRIEST-stil anno 1990. Ralf eller Rob? 80-talisterna får sitt i ”Remission of Sin”, på vilken sången faktiskt görs av Ripper Owens! Låten kunde ha varit med på ”Defenders of the Faith” utan att någon hade protesterat...

Gary Hughes är en flitigt aktiv musiker. TEN är bara en del, om en stor del, av hans output, som omfattar rockoperor, BOB CATLEYS soloskivor, egna soloskivor och sedan TENS nio skivor. Bandet har varit tyst ett tag pga. förändringar i lineupen etc. Men TEN har inte övergivit den melodiösa hårdrocken i alla fall. På denna skiva spelar Gary, gitarristerna Neil Fraser och John Helliwell, basisten Mark Sumner, och keyboardisten Paul Hodson. Gästtrummis är ingen mindre än Mark Zonder (FATES WARNING). Mix och produktion har Dennis Ward (ANGRA, SUNSTORM etc.) tagit hand om, och skivomslaget har de än en gång anlitat Luis Royo för. Nu skall det enligt infon vankas en mix av RAINBOW, WHITESNAKE och GARY MOORE (RIP).

”Endless Symphony” drar igång med svala trummor...

Angel Air/Border

When the NWOBHM succumbed, temporary, in the mid eighties, MOURNBLADE mixed the genre with punk (also down for the moment) and space rock. Vocalist Dunken Mullet and guitarist Rich Jones formed the nucleus of the band, and started it all in 1983. The name was pilfered, just as TYGERS OF PAN TANG and STORMBRINGER, from Science Fiction. Inspiration came ore precisely from the writings of Michael Moorcock, from whom the band got permission to use the name at a book fair. Between 1984-85 the band performed approximately 400 gigs in venues such as The Marquee, the 100 Club, and Dingwalls. Is the magic still present some 26 years later?

Punk/metal and a dose of HAWKWIND, that was apparently a new concept in the mid nineties...
