It’s 30 years since legendary British rockers Asia released their debut album – the self titled release that quickly made a big name for the band with that debut album spending 9 weeks at Number 1 on the Billboard top 100 album chart and selling enough copies to go multi-platinum. Since then the band have released a steady stream of albums and undergone various linuep changes. In 2006 the original band members reunited and since then Asia has been playing with that same original lineup. XXX is their third album since the reunion and is once again being produced by Mike Paxman (who worked with the band on their last album) and is again being released on Frontiers Records. The title is a reflection of the years since the debut album (XXX being roman numerals for 30).

Sist ut på festivalens första dag är Slayer som blivit en folkkär familjeangelägenhet vars musik förenar över flera generationsgränser och säkert kommer att göra det i ytterligare trettio år. Det är hög igenkänningsfaktor hela vägen, inget nytänkande eller experimenterande men inte det minsta tråkigt. Jag kan inte tröttna på Slayer trots att jag i likhet med många här sett dem fler gånger än jag kommer ihåg. Det finns en känsla av trygg snuttefilt att mitt i natten stå bland tusentals andra och höra Hanneman, King, Lombardo och Araya klockrent leverera ”War Ensamble”, ”Death skin Mask, ”Angel of Death” Mandatory Suicide” mfl, mfl, mfl allsångspärlor, och givetvis ”Raining Blood”...

Fransmännen har inte festivalens största publik och det är inte konstigt eftersom deras progressiva och tekniska döds kan verka lite svårtillgänglig såhär sent på kvällen då berusning och annan sensorisk överbelastning gör sig gällande. Speltiden är ur den aspekten lite märklig då man i festivalsammanhang kanske hellre konsumerar lättillgänglig skråla-med-och-headbanga-metal vid denna sena timme. Men nu står Gojira där och de som gillar deras musik gillar den jättemycket. Så pass att det uppstår en circle-pit till ”Flying Whales” och ett engagerat gensvar till tidiga låtar som ”Clone”. Däremot är titellåten från kommande plattan ”Lénfant Sauvage” en ganska seg och såsig skapelse som gör mig rastlös men inget finns att anmärka på framförandet. Fast jag vill ha lite mer action...

Dan Liker är en av metalvärldens giganter, utom till kroppshyddan. Han var med och startade Anthrax och sedan dess har han antingen varit drivande eller ingått i band som S:O:D, Nuclear Assault, NunFuckRitual och Venomous Concept men den här eftermiddagen står han med sin bas på Hades-scenen i Brutal Truth. Bandet bildades 1990, lades ner 1998 och återbildades 2006. Jag har egentligen inga förväntningar så det är med stigande, och glädjande, förvåning som jag ser hur dessa veteraner inom amerikansk grindcore knäpper de flesta av sina efterföljare på näsan och visar hur det ska låta...

Årets upplaga av Copenhell, den tredje i ordningen, blev en formidabel succé för såväl arrangörer som besökare. Allt som mänskliga krafter kunde råda över fungerade helt fantastiskt och var ett typexempel på hur det danska gemytet ter sig när det är som gemytligast. Mest hela tiden spatserade vi mellan scenerna och suckade vällustigt över hur trevligt allting var. Vi förundrades dessutom storligen åt vilka låga priser som gällde på mat och dryck. För oss svenskar var det rena reapriserna och för tillresta norrmän var det typ gratis. Ingen behövde gå hungrig eller törstig och sedan förra året hade utbudet både breddats och förbättrats...

Liljegren Records/Sound Pollution

Norwegian rocker Pelle K first rose to recognition on the Norwegian national TV show “The X Factor”, performing German and Italian power metal songs. Via Youtube videos he became lead singer for both DAMNATION ANGELS and THE ANABASIS, plus got signed with DooLittle. An album with lyrics of love, fear and trust/strengths is promised. Guests like Tommy ReinXeed, Tommy Karevik (SEVENTH WONDER), Oliver Hartmann and Amanda Somerville help out to reach the heights of a band like AVANTASIA. This is the first installment, will there be more?

The pompous intro “Entrance” sets the trend. With the featured guests there can be no doubts what you´re about to hear...

Massacre/Sound Pollution

69 CHAMBERS may not say much, but the name Tommy Vetterli has a fine ring to it. If anyone doesn´t know he is back in the revived CORONER again and has been in KREATOR too. The rest of the band is Tommy´s wife Nina Vetterli – Treml on bass and vocals and drummer Diego Rapacchetti. The band has marketed their metal/rock with tinges of gothic since circa 2008. They apparently make good use of the term crossover and are not a fraid to throw in some pop. Well, well, that sounds far off from CORONER…

Opener “Cause and Effect” features Chrigel Glanzmann from ELUVEITIE on vocals. The tracks combines pop with force and a heavy guitar sound...

Since his first days in STEELER AXEL RUDI PELL has been high in the ranks of the world of music. In 1989 he started his solo career and has since played with the likes of Charlie Huhn, Rob Rock, Jeff Scott Soto, Jörg Michael, Mike Terrana and Johnny Gioeli. Today Axel´s band consists of Johnny Gioelli on vocals (HARDLINE), Ferdy Doernberg (HELLOWEEN, THERION), Volker Krawczak (STEELER), and the long-serving Mike Terrana (MASTERPLAN, RAGE). Axel has been successful with his many “The Ballads albums”, with the fourth appearing in 2011, and all in all this is his fourteenth album!

The amount of sheer routine sees AXEL RUDI PELL deliver yet another album of mostly above average catchy yet heavy tunes...

Tonight was to be Jettblack’s album launch party, held less than a week before the album goes on sale. The gig sold out very quickly, such was the level of expectation. However this wasnt just going to be Jettblack playing a few songs, this was a full gig with four bands playing.

First up were Night by Night, who came on stage just 15 minutes after the doors opened. Normally doors open at 7, but tonight it was 6.30 to give extra time so all the bands could play a decent length set which was nice – there’s nothing worse than finding a great support band and seeing them limited to a 20 minute set. The downside of an early start is that a lot of people don’t check the times and assume the first band won’t be on till 7.30 or 8pm so miss the first bands.
